Co-residence Strategies. Informal Housing Typologies for Extended Families / Estrategias de co-residencia (2ed)

Co-residence Strategies. Informal Housing Typologies for Extended Families | The housing deficit in Chile has been on the rise, driven mainly by the explosive growth of families living as allegados (doubled up, multiple occupancy, etc.) in areas close to urban opportunities. Is the allegamiento a problem or a different way of conceiving the home? The research that gives rise to this book finds that most families living in peri-central areas of Santiago, Chile, prefer to remain as allegados despite living with low habitability. Choosing to live together means that inhabitants must modify their dwellings to adapt them to the needs generated by the expansion of the family, emerging diverse architectural strategies, which help us to understand how different family nuclei live in co-residence to continue residing in well-located areas and take advantage of the benefits of family group daily care.

This publication has impacted Chilean housing policy, redefining what was previously understood as allegamiento and contributing to developing micro radicación housing programs. This second revised edition’s scope is reinforced by including a Spanish and an English version and a completely renewed graphic design.
